Beatles Wisdom
“‘So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.’”
I've always loved the Beatles. Even their early works, which were not my favorites, I could still appreciate, because they help us recognize the group's remarkable growth in just ten short years. Their lead guitarist, George Harrison, I believe, sums up the group's ability to grow and create such amazing songs. He sums it up in one quote.
"It's being here now that's important. There's no past and there's no future. Time is a very misleading thing. All there is ever, is the now. We can gain experience from the past, but we can't relive it; and we can hope for the future, but we don't know if there is one."― George Harrison
I spend too much time reliving the past or planning the future. I wish I could be more like George Harrison and live in the moment more. What is the past or the future, but a life-long series of "the now." Appreciating every second, every movement, every thought, every statement opens one to the joy in and around us.
Jesus lived by this same understanding. "So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today's trouble is enough for today" (Mt. 6:34). Jesus knew that reliving the past and too much planning for the future create unnecessary "worry." We find true joy in being fully present, which allows us to enjoy each moment to the fullest.
Today, practice focusing on being present with those you are talking to, rather than planning the next thing you are going to say. Take a moment to appreciate the things and people around you. Not thinking about what has been or what will be, but what is happening in the moment. It was good enough for a Beatle and the Christ, it might just be good enough for you and me.
