Sing Like No One Can Hear You
“Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides upon the clouds-his name is the Lord-be exultant before him.”
When most people consider the topic of spiritual disciplines, they often think of reading devotions, prayer, meditation, and even taking a walk in the woods. Yet, unless you’ve sung in a choir or been told you have a beautiful voice, you may sing in the shower, but you do not think about the powerful spiritual blessing that comes from singing with reckless abandon.
King David sang and danced with joy around the Ark of the Covenant. In 2 Samuel 6:14-22, the author describes the following: “And David danced before the Lord with all his might, wearing a priestly garment. So David and all the people of Israel brought up the Ark of the Lord with shouts of joy and the blowing of rams’ horns.” Not only does David dance “with all his might,” but his singing and dancing bring honor to God through celebrating the divine presence in their midst.
Your singing may not include dancing around the Ark of the Covenant, but expressing the spiritual joy of singing and dancing around the house, when done with appreciation for the life God offers and sustains, can bless a moment in time and fill our souls with hope. Your singing doesn’t even need to be a hymn or other religious song. You can sing Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” or some other wildly fun secular music, and if you include God in the moment, you will experience God’s blessings in your life.
Today, find a private moment and sing at the top of your lungs, while dancing with reckless abandon. Do it in a private location where you feel safe. Try not to be self-conscious; instead, focus on God smiling down upon you. Most of us live such serious lives. So many demands and expectations are placed upon us every day. A moment of heedless joy is a spiritually valuable gift from the God who will enjoy singing and dancing with you!
