Careless People
I am highly recommending a book that I didn’t enjoy reading. Rather, I listened to it on Audible. Careless People is a true horror tale that pulls back the curtain on Facebook. After you read Sarah Wynn-Williams’ book, you will feel a little dirty, mad at the world, and never want to pull up Facebook ever again.
Most of us do not need one more reason to feel frustrated by an issue we cannot change, but each of us must understand how the tech industry relates to the world and how its unethical worldview endangers our global future. Reading Careless People opens the door to a world most of us have never seen. Between the billionaire lifestyles and the shocking disregard for others, to how their tech product enflamed racial hatred, mass rape, and war, you will begin to appreciate the destruction that occurs when selfish, ignorant, careless people treat the rest of society as unworthy.
Not only is Mark Zuckerberg described in a dangerously unpleasant and self-absorbed light, but all his underlings sell their souls and debase themselves in the name of wealth and greed. Whether she intended to or not, the author does not come off well either. Ironically, the author’s blaming and excuses for her own behavior both diminish and lend legitimacy to her tell-all story.
I am not fond of tell-all books. I usually resent people who throw other people’s privacy under the bus for their own celebrity and financial benefit. At times, Wynn-Williams appears to act holier than thou while also struggling with her own ethical decisions. Yet, when she names the sinful role Facebook had on our 2016 election and elections since then, and the empowering brutal political abuse in Myanmar, and Facebook’s criminally selfish response, you will feel grateful for the uncomfortable knowledge.
Do not continue to be an ostrich, with your head in the sand. When you conclude Careless People, you will want to take a shower to wash the evil corruption and crass egotism off you, and you will also appreciate being a little less gullible. Wynn-Williams’ book will also force you to watch the news with a different eye and to think about how you will include technology in your life. Join me in the uncomfortable journey of how the tech sausage is made.
