The New Interpreter’s Bible: One Volume Commentary
Reading the Bible without proper interpretation leaves one frustrated by unanswered questions and potential misunderstandings that lead to beliefs antithetical to God's intention. A Biblical commentary is beneficial, guiding you with scholarly direction and the knowledge necessary to strengthen your faith and understanding. The challenge is knowing which commentary to purchase. Theological interpretations are vastly different, and some are ridiculous, while others are corrupt and unethical, advocating forms of prejudice. Still others are little more than sweet pablum, offering meaningless sayings with no more information than Chicken Soup for the Soul.
Yet, there are several quality commentaries. Unless you are a Biblical Scholar or a pastor, I would not recommend purchasing a multi-volume commentary. Multi-volume commentaries, at $40.00 to $60.00 each, can add up to hundreds, or a thousand dollars or more. While I use several multi-volume commentaries, I have one go-to one-volume commentary: The New Interpreter's Bible: One Volume Commentary. There are other newer one-volume commentaries, but I haven't found one I enjoy using and trust more than The New Interpreter's Bible One Volume Commentary.
The New Interpreter's Bible One-Volume Commentary provides scholarly information on each book of the Bible. Further, the volume includes academic information for every book's chapter and most verses. I love the volume's introduction to each book, which helps you find the book's theme, writer, date, and theological emphasis, giving you direction as you read. I also cherish the articles on several Biblical themes that deepen one's understanding of the Bible. Articles include titles like "Canon of the Old Testament," which explain how the Hebrew Bible developed, its impact on the ancient faith community, and the theological themes its writers sought to convey.
Articles like "Cultures of the Ancient Near East" and "Cultures of the Greco-Roman World" provide historical background that enriches the reading and guides your understanding. Knowing the joys and struggles of ancient readers helps explain why the texts were written and the comfort they sought to offer in God's name. Other articles will also inspire your curiosity and enhance your Biblical knowledge. The volume will open the breadth of wisdom to your faith as the Bible comes alive within your mind and heart. Dive into The New Interpreter's Bible, and remember to pray for the Spirit's guidance each time you read the Scriptures.
